Alex Marcus

Business Development Manager

Santa Monica-born Alex is a world traveler who's visited 30 countries—so far. She grew up in the suburbs of New York City and received her B.A. in history, with a minor in women’s studies, from Loyola University in New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina, she volunteered to help put her adopted city back together. (Havana and New Orleans, she says, resemble each other. “There is a rawness and authenticity to both places that you just don’t find anywhere else. Part of the reason I fell in love with Havana so quickly was that, to me, it felt like home in New Orleans.”)

Alex spent two summers in Sicily and is currently perfecting her Italian cooking and language skills. Among her fondest travel memories are attending Carnivale in Venice, searching for the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland, and spending New Year’s Eve in Havana with her mom on insightCuba’s Bay of Pigs tour. Just before a planned mother-daughter trip to Brazil, the women learned that travel restrictions to the island had eased considerably for Americans. “I'd always wanted to go to Cuba, so we signed up the next week for our Bay of Pigs trip,” she says. “Six weeks later, I began working at insightCuba as a travel specialist.”

Alex prizes Cuba's “passion for all things, but especially art, music, and dancing. Music is all over Cuba, and on almost every street corner, you can find people dancing. You can literally turn the corner and find a rumba block party happening; walk down the next street and kids are salsa dancing.”
