Take a spiritual journey to Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan and you’ll find yourself receiving a personalized message from the High Lama, hearing stories of adventure on Mount Everest, stopping in at the magical Tiger’s Nest Monastery, delving into Bhuddist and Hindu traditions and learning how people are working to preserve Bhutan’s traditional arts. This 12-day trip features visits to the Potala Palace, the Sera Monastery, the Boudhanath Stupa, Durbar Square, Palace of 55 Window, the five-storied Nyatapola Temple, Memorial Chorten, Tashichho Dzong and more. Accommodations are luxurious, including the stunning St. Regis Lhasa Resort, the Taj Tashi in the Thimphu Valley and the intimate luxury lodge Uma by Como Punakha.

Day 1

On arrival, you’ll be escorted to the deluxe St. Regis Hotel. You’ll have time to rest and acclimate to the altitude before visiting a local family in their home for a lively discussion and insight into Tibetan life and culture.

Day 2

Visit Norbulingka, the resplendent summer palace of the dalai lamas, built in the 18th century. At Jokhang Temple, you’ll find an impressive 4-story timber structure topped with gold. Explore along Barkhor Street, where you’ll see traditional homes and colorful prayer flags fluttering in the breeze as you join local residents browsing through the many shops and market stalls. Then, meet a Tangka painter in his studio for insight into this Tibetan art form.

Lhasa and the Potala Palace
Day 3

Join residents as they perform Kora, an inspiring Buddhist meditation of walking, devotion and reflection. Tour the stupendous Potala Palace that stretches for more than 1,000 feet along a ridge against the snowcapped mountains. Then you'll tour the beautiful Sera Monastery, founded in the 15th century, and visit a local hospital where a Tibetan doctor will offer insight into his use of both traditional healing techniques and western medicine.

Kathmandu / Patan, Nepal
Day 4

Today you will fly to Kathmandu and transfer to the deluxe Hyatt Regency. Then, journey into the Nepalese countryside to Patan, an ancient royal city that traces its origins to the 3rd century BC. Today it’s noted for its collection of fine palace buildings, courtyards and graceful pagodas. This evening, one of the few who have ascended Mt. Everest will share experiences with you.

Day 5

This morning, we’ve made special arrangements for our guests to meet a High Lama for a private audience and blessing. Then visit Boudhanath Stupa, venerated by both Tibetan and Nepalese Buddhists, and stroll through the lively Asan district - a wonderful place to encounter the daily rhythms of Kathmandu and its residents.

You’ll also explore Durbar Square and the ancient royal quarter of the city. Then venture by rickshaw to Thamel and meet the vendors in this bustling bazaar. See Pashupatinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, and then descend to the Bagmati River for Aarti, an ancient Hindu ceremony of light and devotion.

Bhadgaon / Kathmandu Valley
Day 6

Journey into the Kathmandu Valley to Bhadgaon, one of three ancient kingdoms of medieval Nepal. Here you will see the remarkable Palace of 55 Windows and 5-storied Nyatapola Temple. Bhadgaon is also famed for its pottery artisans, and we’ve arranged for a hands-on lesson with a master potter. Before returning to Kathmandu, visit the timeless villages of Bungamati and Khokana for further insight into enduring Nepalese arts and traditions. Tonight, you’ll enjoy the organic farm-to-table cuisine of Krishnarpan.

Paro & Thimpu, Bhutan
Day 7

Fly over the soaring Himalayan peaks to Paro, and continue overland through lush valley landscapes to the deluxe Taj Tashi Hotel in Thimpu. Visit Memorial Chorten with its circumambulating pilgrims, and Tashichho Dzong, an imposing medieval fortress.

Day 8

At the National Institute, you’ll meet students learning and preserving Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts – like wood carving, painting and embroidery. Then visit Dechen Phodrang, a monastic school that hums with the Buddhist recitations of its young students. Join locals at the market and see the immense seated-Buddha statue at Kuensel Phodrang.

Punakha, Bhutan
Day 9

Visit Simtokha Dzong, Bhutan’s oldest fortress, and continue over the 10,300-foot Dochula Pass. On a clear day, you’ll have 360° views over the Himalayas. At Dochula Monastery, you can light a traditional butter lamp – a Buddhist act of wisdom.

Descend into the valley with its farms and fluttering prayer flags to visit Punakha Dzong, built in 1671. Overnight at the luxurious Uma Lodge, Punakha.

Paro
Day 10

Delight in the mountain scenery on the drive to Paro Dzong, a superb example of Bhutanese architecture and a bustling monastic school with nearly 200 resident monks. Then, join a local archery team to learn about this national pastime and enjoy a lesson. Continue to the wonderful Uma Resort, Paro for a 2-night stay.

Day 11

Ascending on horseback and by foot, you’ll have ample opportunity to behold and photograph Taktsang Lhakhang – the spectacular Tiger’s Nest Monastery that’s perched on a granite cliff 3,000 feet above the valley. Along the way, you can hoist a prayer flag for health and good luck. Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest shrines, before returning to your hotel.
