Live from Cuba: The Unexpected Charm of Playa Girón

Manhattan/New York City; The Big Island/Hawai’i; Holland/The Netherlands: some of the world’s most captivating destinations go by two names. And so it is with Playa Girón, more famously known as the Bay of Pigs. In Cuba, it’s rare to hear someone refer to the deep, thumb-shaped bay on the island’s southern coast as the Bahia de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs) – and usually only by way of clarification when talking to North Americans.

Our Girl in Havana: Salsa on the streets of Baracoa

I arrived to dancing in the streets. There was an all-women conga line proceeding down the dusty road, circling back on itself and returning to the small hall where it had started, a bottom-shaking, whooping caterpillar. As they wound past me - sweating under the weight of my rucksack - they beckoned me to join in. With just a moment’s thought, I threw down my bags and joined the party. Recipe of the Week: Lechón Asado (Roast Pork)

If you’re familiar with Cuban cuisine you know that pork is a major staple in most recipes. Pork sandwiches, pork appetizers even pork flavored beverages, just kidding! The point is, Cubans love pork and a great recipe that is sure to get you in the Cuban state of mind is lechon asado. Traditionally, the entire pig is roasted over an open fire and cooked until the skin has the right amount crunch- a great method for those summer barbeques.
